Plot

About the king and his Speech Day after day, decade after decade, century after century … kings and emperors became more diluted figures, weaker and invisible. So, they were forced to become more like entertainers or actors, so that they can stay somehow in the hearts and minds of the common people, especially since World War I and after, when the political map of Europe changed dramatically and forever. King George IV was a hopeless case for a king, or even for a public figure, but certain circumstances brought him to the front line. By a great help and guidance from a so-called theatrical actor, the transformation into a fluent-speaking king was made, the transformation was in and out, in tongue and hear, body and soul. The leading actors captured magnificently the struggles, pains, hopes of the historical moment and took us back in time by their riveting “classical” performance … a king speaks under the guidance of a common man “maestro” …. This is a brilliant film, a labor of love and talent, and very humane in its deepest message, a landmark of political ruling in modern “democratic” times. It did deserve the many Oscars it was nominated to, and the four that it took actually for best film, best director, best actor, and best screenplay. Personally, I wasn’t that happy with the comparison the film made between King George IV and Hitler the “charismatic” fluent dictator. Maybe it helped the film dramatically, but it was somehow politically “incorrect”, no one should be put in comparison with Hitler!
